...making jewelry.

At the moment, I seem to be spending every waking minute that I'm not at work (which admittedly, is not enough considering I've been working every weekend..ugh!), at my jewelry bench. I'm sawing and soldering and generally just making a big mess, but I've been fairly happy with the results.

I'm obsessed with a large loop necklace I recently made:

All of the loops are somewhat oval and hand-forged, purposely not perfect. In case you somehow thought I'd overcome my anal, perfectionist tendencies! (EDITED TO ADD: perfectionist and anal, you dirty dirty minds)

More new goodies over on flickr if you are interested.

AND.... I finally put up a little shop on Etsy, in the hopes that perhaps I can make a little money to buy ~more~ supplies and materials. It's probably a good thing I have limited space, because otherwise, I'd probably be out of control!
You probably don't, and I can't blame you, since it's been approximately 24 million years since I last posted. Alas, I've been doing other things. Sorry.

However, I have pictures to temporarily distract you from my lack o' posting.

I chose John, by youngest brother-in-law, in this years Christmas draw, and fretted for weeks about what I was going to get him. He is ridiculously creative with his gift giving, so I didn't want to let him down, but all he had to offer as a suggestion was something about buying him a loft in Manhattan. Which doesn't exactly fit the constraints of our family not-so-secret Santa gift exchange. About a week before Christmas, he finally tells me he wants jewelry. If anyone else asked, I'd be flattered. With John, I was terrified. He goes to DESIGN SCHOOL. He's becoming a fashion designer. He spends 24 hours a day with people ooooozing creativity. Shit. After much deliberation, I just started cranking things out. Some of which I now don't like very much, but some of which I love. All of which were packaged in specimen jars and given to him for Christmas. Behold, my faves:

The rest of his goodies can be seen here.

I've also finally finished up some things I started working on forever ago, including this ring:

My sister picked up Sage on Saturday afternoon, since we are headed to Aruba this week. Though there was some skepticism at her motives (i.e. convincing her roommates they did NOT need a dog), we were game. Lauren has never had to look after a dog and even started making little gagging noises when I demonstrated how to pick up poop. (Note: This is completely different from the night-time fakeout that my husband apparently conducts, whereby he leans down as though he was going to pick up the dog poop, but doesn't actually touch it and then keeps on walking. Nice.)

However, it appears I need not have worried. I just received this:

Dear Mom & Dad,
I'm having a fabulous time staying with my Aunt Lauren. The city is
very scary, but I'm getting more used to it every time we go for a
walk. Hopefully no one else will think i'm blind. That was insulting.

Today she had to leave me to go to work, but i jumped on her bed when
she left and took a nap. Her bed is very comfortable. Normally i sleep
under it, but i hide there when she tries to take me outside, so she
puts stuff in front of it once i get up. She's smarter than me.

Today we went to PetsMart. I do not like Petsmart. I layed down in the
aisle while Auntie Lauren picked out a new harness for me. When i
tried to run away my feet just slid on the slippy floor. Lauren said
"ha!" There was a cute puppy there that jumped up at me and gave me
kisses. I ignored him, but Auntie Lauren played with him.

I got a new toy today that i LOVE. My Auntie Lauren is the best puppysitter ever. I sent you a picture of me playing with it. It has rope AND tennis balls. I'm going to see how quickly i can destroy it.

I like Lauren's room mates too, they are fun to play with, I try to steal their food and socks, but then they learned my commands too, and now they can make me sit and lay down. too bad.

We went for a walk before bed tonight and i got to wear my new RED
harness. They had pink, but it was a really prissy baby pink that only
a sissy dog like Paris Hilton owns would wear. I would have no self
respect in that color, so i'm glad she chose the red. Anyway, I like
the harness because I don't choke myself when we go for walks, and i
don't try and pull lauren over either. I don't know how it works. I
think it's a magic harness that makes doggies good.

Well, it's my bedtime now. I need my rest so i can wake lauren up way
before she wants to get up with the threat of peeing on her new rug.

Good night mom & dad, have fun at the beach! I'll be here in the
freezing cold making Auntie Lauren get pneumonia! yay!
A friend of mine from work is in a band, and they played last night at the Grog & Tankard in DC.
Since I have amassed all this (relatively) fancy new camera gear, I happily offered to take some photos. Despite wondering what the hell I'd gotten myself into, it was pretty damn fun. Of course, my husband called me a groupie and a band-aid, but hello? the band wanted me to do it.
I mentioned in my Christmas recap that my younger sister Lauren made some of our gifts this year.

She's always had talent, but timeliness isn't normally a strong suit. When she mentions that she's making your gift, you normally need to be prepared to wait. Like we still are for our wedding gift...

This year, she went crazy and basically didn't sleep the week before Christmas, trying to get everything done. When she arrived here, she asked for some pliers (?) and disappeared into the guestroom for an hour.

In my opinion, it was all worth it:

Do these look familiar to you? She based the paintings on these photos from the wedding.

This isn't the only artwork this talented chica has painted for us. You can see some more on flickr.

Christmas this year was fantastic. Manic, action packed and way too fast, but wonderful none the less (or perhaps because of it!).

In many ways, we did the usual -

Bought a tree that was too big for our living room: (It may not be obvious, but we had to bend the top to fit the star on. And rearrange most of our furniture.)

I went all Martha on amphetimines and made WAY too many cookies, candied nuts, mint brownies, ginger snaps, etc.

This was the first year we stayed home, planning to spend the holiday with the in-laws, after spending Thanksgiving with my side of the family.

My sister did a fabulous job rallying the troops and convinced my parents to drive up the Saturday before Christmas. Patrick's mom joined us for a fancy little dinner I whipped up (any excuse to use all the linens/glasses/get fancy):

The menu started with a fig, candied walnut, goats cheese and arugula salad, dressed with a homemade balsamic vinagrette. The main course was a delish beef tenderloin with shallots and port. And bacon. Because really, can you get any better than bacon AND beef AND alcohol in one dish? In case you aren't sure, the answer is NO.

After dinner we did a pre-Christmas, since my parents would be heading back down to Richmond on Christmas Eve. I was totally spoiled (this trend continued over the next couple of days...) and my sister gave us some fabulous handmade gifts. Which deserve their own post.

Far too many bottles of wine later, we finally went to sleep on Christmas Eve Eve.

The next night, Christmas Eve, we spent with my sister-in-law's family, which was tons of fun. We aren't technically related to these people at all, and yet couldn't have felt more welcome. Lots of kids (the youngest only a couple weeks old) and homemade Italian food made for a family-centered night.

We spent Christmas morning with our crazy niece and nephew who quite possibly now own more toys than the kid in The Toy. Hopefully they won't ask for Richard Pryor next year.

After breakfast, we all shuffled to Patrick's mom's house, to spend Christmas with the rest of the family.

This was the first Christmas day I'd spent without my family. Or, shall I say, my original family. Patrick and I are now our own tiny family of two (plus the crazy canine). And although I missed waking up at my parents house, all that really mattered was that our newly official family was intact.

What we really realized, waking up just the two of us on Christmas Day, is that we like chaos. We like big families. And big family gatherings. We love the noise, the generations mixing, the whole shebang. When we were little, each of us spent Christmas at our grandparents houses, with cousins and great-grandparents and perhaps even a friend of the family.

Hopefully one day we'll be able to re-create that magic.
I'm alive, I'm well, I'm just running around like a headless chicken. Apparently, PhDs just don't complete themselves. Imagine that~

Since I'm determined to be Dr. Erin by the end of 2007, I've been spending the vast majority of my weekends in the lab. Thrilling, I know. Projects on the homefront have dwindled, along with my posting here.

No work tomorrow (it's Martin Luther King Day), and the man departed for a work trip today, so I'm actually going to make an effort to update this old thing. And post lost overdue recaps of Christmas, New Years, and the few exciting things I have managed to squeeze in.
Stay tuned.

In less than 24 hours, Patrick and I are flying down to Atlanta for his aunt's wedding. I know what you are thinking... this family sure gets married a lot.

Only two seconds ago did I realize that we didn't make any arrangements for Sage. It's not like she's a cat and we can just leave her with some food and water. She is a border collie/lab mix. Dogs really don't come any more high maintenance than that. Of course, since it's a family wedding, all the relatives that I'd feel comfortable imposing upon are flying down there with us. Dammit.

Guess it's time to call some kennels? (We've only boarded her once, and it was outside of Richmond at this great place that let's them play with other dogs all day and eat Frosty Paws and generally be TOTALLY SPOILED. And yet, due to my guilt at leaving her, I'm totally ok with that. But not guilty enough to be ok spending $60 a night.)

I suck. (And for that matter, so does my husband. He is still in the dark about our doggie-parenting slip.) You know what the worst part is? IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME.

UPDATE: My neighbors, who rock the casbah, agreed to look after the crazy pupster. They have two dogs of their own, one of which we are convinced Sage was separated from at birth. It makes for pretty much a non-stop rolling dogpile through their house, and by the time we get back and Sage comes home, she's exhausted. I love these people.

So, I realize it's been about 10 days since Thanksgiving, (or at least it was when I started writing this novel of an entry...) but whatever. Here's the recap:

We went down to Richmond to spend Thanksgiving with my family. Since it's only my parents and one sister, holidays can be a little quiet. Our extended family (many of whom made the trip for the wedding) is spread all over - Hawaii, a huge California contingent, Michigan (yay Camp Gull Lake!), Arizona, Maryland, Washington State, Oregon, you get the idea. Not content to just have a quiet little gathering of five when we cook enough for 20, we love to invite people over.

In a way, Thanksgiving is a perfect holiday. No presents to stress over, four days off work, good food, lots of vino and some family fun. Plus there's football for when the menfolk get bored...

In years past, my family has joined with other families to celebrate. One of the most memorable Thanksgiving dinners was held at my parents neighbors house. The dad was a big hunter and tended to have a Jeffrey Dahmer (only with deer, instead of, you know, humans) thing going in the garage most of the time. Knowing that we would not be ok with venison, he traded some deer meat with another buddy for a turkey. A real wild turkey. Until it got shot at least. Only unbeknownst to us, the guy had shot it with buckshot. In case you aren't familiar with buckshot, it's basically a plastic bullet casing filled with little BBs. Or at least thats what I think it is, because I don't actually shoot guns.

Every couple of minutes, someone would bite into a piece of turkey and make a "I think I just cracked a tooth" face. Sure enough, it was another piece of buckshot. At some point, we decided to make a little pile by each of our plates and the person who had the most by the end of dinner was the winner. Cool, I know.

This year, no one was poisoned with lead animal bullets, but it was fun nonetheless. My mother invited a German family who just relocated to the area over for their first Thanksgiving. Their hilarious 18 month old kept us entertained, when my dad didn't.... My parents own a McDonalds highchair. They like to say they stole it, but it actually came from some friends of my grandparents when I was a baby (they owned a bunch of McDonalds). Over the years, we lost the seat belt part and someone sawed the front cross bar off, but while dangerous, it still functioned as it's name suggests, a high chair. That is, until this year, when my Dad decided to demonstrate that he could sit in it, turning his hips and sitting down, then landing promptly on his ass, after the chair blew apart.

I think wine might have come out of my nose.

Off he went to the garage, and an hour later, post wood glue and clamps, the danger-chair was back in business.

If you are wondering what we had to eat, I made this butternut squash soup as a starter (it's delish - I make it all the time).

Mom did the turkey and stuffing, and my sister made a ton of dishes from the Barefoot Contessa Parties!, all of which were rather delish.

For dessert, I brought down a pumpkin pie and a wonderful chocolate pie. For the chocolate pie, I made a Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafer crust (looks like black dirt, yum yum) using this recipe. The wafers can be a bit of a pain to find in stores, but thankfully, my local Safeway even had them.

Once cooled, I used the chocolate filling from this recipe. Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo before we cut into it and it was promptly DEVOURED. It turns out, my mom used to make something very similar when I was a child, and my craving for a chocolate/chocolate pie was some sort of repressed memory. A wonderful combination. Try it!

The rest of our time in Richmond was fairly uneventful and involved us being big idiots as usual - demonstrating our skills in trivia and lack of skills in all sporting activities.

However, just when we thought we'd gotten on the road for an uneventful ride home, about a dozen cop cars come flying by, in a high speed chase. They tapped the driver, the car spun out of control, slamming into the side rails and then the police dragged the driver out of the car, at gunpoint. All about 50 feet in front of us. Crazy, I know. You can read about it here.

Further evidence I need to be mounted with a head cam.

I get up early every day for work. A lot earlier than most sane people.

When the alarm goes off at 5 am, I repeat to myself that this means I won't have to sit in traffic and will actually get home before bedtime. In all honesty, I normally drag myself out of bed thinking about how this cannot go on forever. It's inhumane. Don't get me wrong, I'm a morning person. For me, sleeping in on the weekends means not getting up until 7:30. Decadent, I know.

This morning, the alarm went off and I felt like I'd been run over by a truck. A big one. I crawled to the bathroom and started getting ready for work, cursing the fact that it was so early and wondering if perhaps the Target near my house was hiring, since the commute looked great. I was especially irritated with this fatigue, considering that I'd made a point of going to bed at 9:30 the night before.

I finally finish getting dressed and walk downstairs to the kitchen to put the kettle on. And I see the clock on the stove: 3:48. My eyes quickly dart to the microwave. 3:49. WHATTHEFUCKISGOINGON?

And honestly, it took a second to sink in. Perhaps because my synapses weren't really up to speed inthemiddleofthefuckingnight.

Apparently, my alarm clock no longer works. Or rather, it just works on bizarro time, because according to it, it was 5:30 and time to head to work.

Grrrrrr.

I'm finally going to get the trusty Accord back tomorrow, following this little debacle. A full month later, it's ready. Apparently, it takes more time to replace the left side than build a car from scratch...

In the meantime, my insurance company hooked me up with a rental car. Their policy is to put you in a car equivalent to what you normally drive. Obviously, I was unaware of my street cred, because according to Allstate and Enterprise, Honda Accord = DODGE CHARGER.

I'm not a big car person. I like driving something safe and reliable, and dammit, good value for money. I appreciate good fuel economy, since it feels like drive the equivalent of circumnavigating the globe every week on the beltway. I had an old Accord and last year, when it died, I bought a new Accord. I'd like a hybrid or a Mini. Never did I think I'd be behind the wheel of a car with an advertising tag line of: Modern muscle hits the street. Unleash. With its unbelievable horsepower and amazing amount of torque, 2007 Dodge Charger isn’t for the timid. But why be shy? Get inside a Dodge Charger today and let yourself go, go, go!

I think I'm possessed.

Instead of spending my time in the car mentally chastising other drivers for not signaling before switching lanes or otherwise being a silent vice principal of the road, I now look at the RPMs and get bizarre satisfaction out of burning other people off when the light turns green. I even think back nostalgically to the days of driving a car with a manual transmission.

Anybody up for a drag race tonight before my muscle car turns back into a pumpkin?
When I drove past our neighborhood polling station at 5:30 this morning, there was already a line outside waiting to cast their ballot when the polls opened at 6 am. Wow!

If you haven't already today, get out and vote! Virginia, and I assume most other states, have online lists of polling stations, so if you aren't sure where to go, you can find out easily, by just typing in your address.

In Maryland, you don't even have to show ID, so go vote for someone else. (So long as you vote for the Democrats. Kidding. In other political news... one of the women I work with brought a fantastic selection of cookies and treats to work today. What is she celebrating? The verdict in Saddam's trial.
With few kids in the neighborhood and no homegrown babies to dress up, Halloween night has been fairly anticlimactic these past few years.

I think dressing up is quite possibly the funnest thing ever and have been known to create entire theme parties around an outfit I wanted to wear. It's just a shame that I am genetically programmed to select the dorkiest costumes on the planet.

You know how most girls want to be princesses or Barbie or something else that makes them look attractive and girly? Not I.

The evidence:

One year I was a present. Nothing attracts 10 year old boys like a girl inside a big box with a ginormous bow strapped to her head.

Another year, I was Waldo. You know the character you try and find in picture books? Even better, Lauren was Wilma, Waldo's girlfriend/sister/illegitimate daughter/whatever. Hot, I know.

Sadly, future dilution of my gene pool may not help the situation. As a child, the Man dressed up as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. In case you don't know why this is funny, it's pretty much the equivalent of Nicole Richie dressing up as Ursula from the Little Mermaid...
Ok, fine. The title is slightly misleading, but the content isn't that exciting, so I had to rope you in somehow...

Since the man was going out of town for the weekend, I had lined up a multitude of projects.

He leaves the house for more than a couple hours and the While You Were Out demon starts whispering in my ear. These little projects tend not to be so little, and I can confirm that the last minute stress that those folks on the actual show seem to deal with is real. It's all about the big reveal and god forbid it's not ready the second he walks through the door. I'm certainly happy there aren't cameras to record all my mishaps, but on the other hand, I wouldn't mind some carpenters and getting everything free from Home Depot.

Unfortunately, all my plans flew out the window, following all this crap.

I had purchased my paint testers in advance, so that seconds after he drove off to the airport, I was painting swatches. The night before the accident, I'd actually masked off the room and I was not willing to let that go to waste.

I was rather impressed with myself that I nailed the paint color on my first try, until I went to purchase a couple gallons of wonderful Benjamin Moore paint (Definitely worth the money. Learned the hard way.) and they mentioned some Pottery Barn gift card promotion. Turns out that Barley (BM 199) is one of the colors Pottery Barn uses in the catalog. I'm original like that.

With 48 hours until Charity showed up (a genuine guest and the inaugural user of both the bedroom and the spiffy, but slightly eye-assaulting new bathroom), I set into action.

I finished the second coat of paint early Saturday morning and felt pretty good. Until the man suggested that Charity might suffocate in the paint fumes. Solution: open all windows and doors in basement, allowing gale force winds to blow through, taking paint stink with them.

Changed out the bed frame, re-hung the pictures, installed curtain rods, put up some curtains and set up bedside tables, one of which was happily given a new lease on life with the help of the Rust-o-leum American Accents Distressed Antique Black paint kit and some new hardware:

I even had time for a nap in the afternoon.

More importantly, we didn't have to take Charity to the hospital for VOC induced asthma. But I did offer her the option of sleeping somewhere else in the house
In case you ever decide to, you know, paint your hands or any other body part for that matter, I recommend driving on over to Home Depot and getting yourself some Gripper primer. Really, they were NOT kidding when they said it sticks to anything.

I've washed my hands three times, exfoliated with a scrub, picked at the primer, scrubbed with a washcloth. And still, I could play Powder's sister.

There is a project in the works, because hell, if I'm going to be loopy because of what the neurologist told me was inner ear issues following my concussion, I may as well add some paint fumes into the mixture

Full details soon.

In other news, Charity (she of profound berry knowledge and bridesmaid extraordinare) will be here this weekend. Yay!
